iPhone 4 Needs a New Home

Apple exclusive contract with AT&T is coming to an end soon. The tech industry has wide speculation about Apple’s move once the chains have finally been broken. Some say Verizon is the likely carrier as it is the next largest cell phone provider in the United States. Apple could also squeeze out some of the competitors, like the many Android phones Verizon has done so well with up until this point.

This would increase sales for the iPhone 4 while also putting the hurt on any other smartphone Verizon may have at the moment. Of course, there are other rumors that Apple could turn to Sprint or T-mobile but the odds are less so for T-Mobile as it is the smaller of the top four US carriers and runs on a different frequency that is not compatible with the iPhone 4.

iPhone 4 Upload Speed on AT&T Being Fixed

HSUPA or High Speed Uplink Packet Access has had some iPhone 4 users disappointed in AT&T. Reports started a few weeks ago about poor upload speeds using the iPhone 4 on AT&T. Some went as far as to say that AT&T had pulled a bait and switch, capping speeds in a tier system. AT&T denied those claims.

It was later announced that HSUPA, a technology that older phones like the iPhone 3G weren’t capable of, is now effecting upload speeds on the iPhone 4, although download speeds aren’t effected. AT&T states that a patch is in place and should take effect gradually in the next couple of weeks. Upload speeds on the iPhone 4 are currently capped at 384 kbps, the normal 3G upload speed, until the patch is finalized.

iPhone 4 on Verizon

It’s long been said and speculated that Apple could make a deal to sell the iPhone 4 on Verizon’s network after it’s exclusivity contract is up with AT&T. Verizon is the largest US cell phone carrier and doesn’t seem to have the AT&T 3G problems that so many iPhone users complain about. Apple will be in a good position soon but if the switch is made or if Apple carries on both networks, it will mean trouble for AT&T either way. Android phones have been very popular with Verizon, that could soon change. There is no better time to get an iPhone!
